Today McLaren announced they had signed this 18 year old to their young driver programme. Which is the programme that Lewis Hamilton burst onto the F1 scene from.

I took this shot at Brands Hatch in October 2010, Tom won the Formula Renault championship that day, and he was only 16! I was helping a friend who had a hospitality suite at Brands that day, and we were looking after Tom's Dad, Stig Blomqvist. Anyone of my vintage will remember Stig. A nicer, more unassuming guy you couldn't wish to meet. He won the World Rally Championship in 84, driving the wonderful Audi Quattro. Scandinavian drivers learn their craft on snow and ice, so historically do well in F1. Ronnie Peterson, Keke Rosberg, Mika Hakkinen,Heikki Kovalainen to name just a few. So who knows, in a few years maybe Tom, with McLaren's guidance, will be the next Scandinavian F1 world champ.
